By1931 saw the erection of New York City’s Empire State Building, this was to become the tallest building in the world, a record that it was to hold for 40 years, that was until 1972 when the North Tower of the World Trade Center was built and consequently taking over the title itself.
All that has since changed by the awful destruction of the World Trade Center, this now means that Empire State Building retains the title of being the tallest building in New York City.
Officially opened during the Great Depression of the thirties unfortunately made it hard to rent out, coupled with the fact that it was located away from any form of public transportation meant that New Yorkers were not keen on living there.
The Empire State Building actually only started to make a profit 20 years after it was first built.
Things have not always run smoothly for the Empire State Building, during 1945 a B-25 bomber actually crashed into the building between the 79th and 80th floors, both engines flew off in separate directions, one fell down an elevator shaft whilst another went straight through the building and landed almost an entire block away.
This is just one of the many stories associated with the Empire State Building and was told by an elevator operator who was on duty at the time of the accident, incredibly he actually fell 75 storeys down the elevator shaft and lived to tell the tale, unfortunately the other side of the story is that 14 other people died that day due to pilot error in the fog.
The Empire State Building actually houses two observation decks, one on the 86thfloor and one on the 102nd floor; needless to say they have become one of the world’s most popular tourist attractions.
